Regarded by many as the greatest stage musical of all time, West Side Story broke the mould for musical theatre.  Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Leonard Bernstein composed the iconic score (setting Steven Sondheim’s lyrics) which is regarded as his greatest ever work, blending jazz, Latin and opera with the traditional stage musical.  The film version, released in 1961, won a staggering 10 Oscars including Best Picture.
