First released as a film in 1994, with the iconic soundtrack penned by Tim Rice, Elton John and Hans Zimmer, the stage version of The Lion King debuted in 1997 in Minneapolis and it is the third-longest running show in Broadway history (also the highest grossing). It opened at The Lyceum in London in 1997 and is still running after over 7600 performances. It is now estimated that well over 113 million people have seen the stage show worldwide.
