Composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman originally wrote Little Shop as a stage musical in 1982 (based on a 1960 film). However, it only sprung to worldwide fame (and developed a cult-like following) after the 1986 musical film version directed by Frank Oz was released.  Unusually there are 3 different endings to the musical – the film ending was re-shot after audiences did not like the original, and now ends with the shop being blown up by Seymour and then Audrey and him living happily ever after (although we see the bud of a new ‘plant’ in their garden); the stage musical ends with the plant taking over the theatre … and then the world!
