Originally conceived as a film directed by John Walters (released in 1988), this Marc Shaiman musical premiered on stage in 2002, immediately winning 8 Tony awards and running on Broadway until 2009 (totalling 2,642 performances).  As well as numerous productions across the world since then (the London production receiving 4 Olivier Awards), the musical film was released in 2007.
