Language Department Success

The success of our Languages department has been officially recognised by the Department for Education, who have selected UVHS to co-lead a Languages Hub for Cumbria, together with Keswick School.

The aim of the project is for us to share our success and language teaching expertise with other local primary and secondary schools. The Government is investing £14.9 million into Languages education across England, with the aim of boosting the number of pupils who opt to study a foreign language at GCSE and A Level.

After interviewing 60 schools, 19 have been successful in gaining the funding and recognition to lead this new government initiative.

UVHS prides itself on being the only school in South Cumbria to offer three foreign languages up to A Level, and we hope that with this new drive, we can further enhance our own provision, as well as supporting and building strong working relationships with many other local schools.

Schools minister Nick Gibb said: “Young people who are confident in a second language are at a huge advantage in life. On top of the social and cultural advantages it provides, there are many economic benefits of learning another language. That is why I have long called for more pupils to consider studying languages such as German at GCSE and this programme will crucially equip teachers with the necessary training and knowledge to support pupils looking to do so.”
